Professor Emeritus of Archaeology
MICHAEL VICKERS is Professor Emeritus of Archaeology at the University of Oxford, an Emeritus Fellow of Jesus College, and former Curator of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the Ashmolean Museum. He has also taught at University College, Dublin, the University of Libya in Benghazi, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has been a Visiting Member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and is a Corresponding Member of the German Archaeological Institute, and of the Archaeological Institute of America. He was co-director of the joint British-Georgian Pichvnari Expedition 1998-2010. He is currently Dean of Degrees of Jesus College, Oxford and a Visiting Research Professor at Tbilisi State University.
His research interests include the archaeology, history and literature of the Greek, Roman and Byzantine worlds; political imagery in Greek art and drama, especially Aristophanes and Sophocles; the topography of classical and Byzantine cities, in particular Euesperides (Cyrenaica) and Thessaloniki; the recycling of ancient marble; the classical tradition in Renaissance and later sculpture and painting; the history of taste; ancient material values; metrology and mensuration; the archaeology of the Black Sea (especially Pichvnari in Georgia).
