Scholarships

The Oxford Nizami Ganjavi Centre offers one scholarship every year to Master's and DPhil applicants whose research relates to the study of the history, languages and cultures of Azerbaijan, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Please note that applicants are considered automatically as part of their application to the University, and that there is no separate application process.

The ONGC provides the following for scholars:

  • Course fees covered in full.
  • A living allowance at the same rate as UK research council rate (£15,009 in 2019/20), which is normally sufficient to cover the living costs of a single student living in Oxford.
  • Dedicated working space in the ONGC Room, located in the Oriental Institute.

Awards are made for the full duration of a student's fee liability for the agreed course. If your scholarship is offered for a course lasting more than one year, the continuation of your scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based on satisfactory academic progress.

Our Scholars are expected to:

  • To excel in their given course and meet all their academic requirements.

  • To contribute to the research environment of the ONGC.

  • To provide a short profile about yourself and your research activity that may be added to the ONGC website.

Oxford Nizami Ganjavi scholarships are available for applicants who are applying to any full-time or part-time DPhil or Master’s course, and whose proposed research is relevant to the study of the history, languages and cultures of Azerbaijan, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

This embraces all those courses offered by the Humanities or Social Sciences Division.

You must ensure you meet the criteria for entry to your course, including English language requirements.

For more information on submitting a graduate application, please see the Graduate Admissions website. Applicants whose research coincides with the aims of the Oxford Nizami Ganjavi Centre will be short-listed by their relevant faculties. No separate application process is required.

Candidates will initially be short-listed by their relevant faculties, before being considered by the ONGC Board, who will base their selection on the following criteria:

  • Quality of the proposed research.
  • Qualifications and experience of the applicant.
  • Potential of the proposed research to contribute to the aims of the ONGC.

Successful applicants will be notified by email.
